DO YOU NEED INSURANCE?

Proof of insurance coverage is required whenever you are filming within the City of Los Angeles or the County of Los Angeles.  Your proposed filming activities and choice of locations might affect the liability coverage and limits that you must obtain.

An Accord Certificate of Insurance is normally acceptable as evidence of insurance if it complies with the following requirements:

  • Certificate Holder is named as an additional insured.
  • Contains a Thirty-(30)-day notice of cancellation provision (ten (10) days for non-payment of premium on certificate).
  • Certificate is completed by your insurance company or designee.
  • Certificate is provided by an insurer admitted to do business in California or written through a California-licensed broker.

TYPE OF INSURANCE AND LIMITS REQUIRED

Type of Insurance and Limits Required:
Commercial General Liability or Comprehensive Form


Limits of Liability:
$500,000 for still photography (all areas)
$1,000,000 for filming
$2,000,000 for the Department of Water and Power
$3,000,000 for water areas under the jurisdiction of the Harbor Department (Must include coverage for vessels)
$5,000,000 when using aircraft or using the “Sunken City” area at Point Fermin


FilmL.A. Requirements:

All FilmL.A. processed permits require one (1) Accord Certificate of Insurance naming “FilmL.A., Inc.” as an additional insured.

For the City of Los Angeles:

For filming permits under the jurisdiction of the City of Los Angeles:

  • The Certificates of Insurance for the City of Los Angeles must be submitted directly to the City of Los Angeles Risk Management Division for approval.  They can be sent by email to cao.insurance.bonds@lacity.org, or by fax to (213) 978-7615.
  • For instructions and information on complying with the City Insurance Requirements, please visit the web-site at http://www.lacity.org/cao/risk/ or contact Victor Parker, Director of City Risk Management, at (213) 978-7655.

For the County of Los Angeles:

For filming permits under the jurisdiction of the County of Los Angeles, you need:

  • One (1) Accord Certificate of Insurance naming the County of Los Angeles as an additional insured.

For Other Jurisdictions:

For filming permits under the jurisdiction of the cities of Diamond Bar, South Gate, City of Industry, and/or West Hollywood:

  • One (1) Accord Certificate of Insurance naming the respective city as an additional insured.
